Chair of the European and External Affairs Committee

delyn-sandy-mewies.jpgBorn in 1950 in Brymbo, Sandy was educated at Grove Park Girl’s Grammar School and holds a BA Hons degree. Sandy was elected to the Assembly in May 2003, and is a former Mayor of Wrexham and served as a County Councillor for more than 16 years. Whilst serving as a Councillor, she was the Chair of Social Services, Executive Board members, Chair of Scrutiny, and Deputy Leader.

In addition she has previously worked as a lay schools inspector and as well as being a journalist for many years in North East Wales and Chester, was Deputy News Editor on the North Wales Evening Leader.

For three years she worked in the voluntary service sector as the first community care advisor of Clwyd Community Care Federation, working with the sector to plan for the introduction of community care in Clwyd and supporting voluntary and other relevant organisations. Additionally,
Sandy researched, wrote and produced the first ever Carers Information Pack in Clwyd which has since been disaggregated for use in the new unitary authority areas. In addition she founded and ran a Local Agenda 21 Group, which has supported local community environmental projects. 
Sandy is a current member of North Wales Probation Board and former director of the Wales European Centre.

Sandy currently serves on the Social Justice & Regeneration Committee, the Environment, Planning & Countryside Committee and the North Wales Regional Committee.

Her political interests include social exclusion and equality.
